BEING A COMMISSIONER

The Nebraska Commission on the Status of Women is a single-focused agency that champions Nebraska’s women and families, including men and children, through providing research, education, legislative advocacy, and services to promote financial independence, educational and professional achievement, and strong families.

NCSW consists of 30 members appointed by the Governor from across the State. Five Commissioners are appointed from each of the six Supreme Court districts to serve three-year terms, and not more than one-half of the members are from one political party.

The job duties of each Commissioner include:

1. Attend four quarterly meetings each year.

It is critical that Commissioners attend each meeting. This is where all business is conducted, votes are taken and decision making occurs. The meetings are held for a full day on the fourth Friday of the month in January, April, July and October. In the past, meetings have alternated among various locations across the State to help facilitate travel for all Commissioners.

2. Establish a strong partnership with your District Senator.

Each Commissioner is expected to build a strong relationship with the Senator representing their district in order to facilitate communication and advocacy during the legislative session, and to work together locally throughout the year to promote services and programs that produce positive outcomes for women and families.

3. Actively participate in Commission initiatives.

Commissioners have many opportunities to become involved in, and provide leadership to, the Commission including legislative advocacy during the legislative session as well as assisting Senators with interim studies during the Summer and Fall; participation in NCSW committees in which key issues are identified and initiatives, projects or programs are developed to address those issues; and acting as NCSW ambassadors throughout Nebraska in order to ensure that the Commission is always in tune with the needs of women and families in the State.

Commissioners are appointed by the government to serve a three year term and can be re-appointed for a 2nd term. Appointments are made from the six Supreme Court Districts, with a minimum of 18 and a maximum of 30 Commissioners and not more than one-half consisting of one political party.
