Following the creation of President Kennedy's Commission on the Status of Women in 1961, Gov. Frank Morrison established the Nebraska Governor's Commission on the Status of Women in 1964.

The Commission became a statutory state agency in 1971 with the first staff hired and doors opened to the public in 1974.

In 1975, the Commission's name was changed to the Nebraska Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW). An equitable political and geographical balance of no more than 30 Commissioners are maintained through gubernatorial appointments from each of the six, 1972 NE Supreme Court Districts. Not more than one half of the members serving may be from any one political party. Commissioners may serve for two three-year terms.
